"The Order: 1886" developer was shut down! Also developed PSP "God of War"
As Meta slashes the budget of its virtual reality (VR) division, its game studio Ready at Dawn has confirmed its closure.
The studio is best known for developing the PlayStation 4 exclusive game Order: 1886, in addition to producing PSP games such as God of War: Soul of Sparta and God of War: Chain of Olympus. In 2017, Ready at Dawn developed the critically acclaimed VR game Solitary Voices for Meta, and joined Meta in 2020 as part of Oculus Studios. In 2021, Ready at Dawn launched Solitary Voices 2.
As early as April 2023, Ready at Dawn had already undergone a round of layoffs as part of Meta's further layoffs plan. The move caused shock in the industry because Ready at Dawn is an important partner of Meta in the VR field.
For former Ready at Dawn employees, Oculus Studios encouraged them to explore other positions. Meta has said it will continue to invest in VR, but will focus on long-term growth rather than short-term profits. Therefore, the closure of Ready at Dawn is seen as part of Meta's strategic shift in VR.
The closure of Ready at Dawn marks the end of an era in the VR industry. The studio was a pioneer in early adoption of VR technology and was instrumental in helping to develop and promote VR games. Although the studio is closed, its legacy will live on as VR games continue to evolve and grow.
